I recently made a target shooting game for the residents at our aged care home, and they had so much fun playing it. To add some variety to the games that they play I wanted to make another variation of the target shooting game. I know what you are thinking”why recycled a target shooting game into a target shooting game”. And the answer is with the upcycled version we are able to play the game as a group.

Making the target
To make the base you need a round piece of wood. I recycled an old tabletop I had at home. It was in poor condition but it will be covered so I was not too worried. The round catch discs come with straps on them you just need to attach then to the board. You can drill two pilot holes in the wood first, then use a jigsaw to cut a slot between the two holes.
Once you have cut the holes you can cover the board in some suitable fabric. You can use spray adhesive to attached the fabric to the front, a staple gun to secure the fabric on the back. Using a craft knife cut the fabric where the slot is so you can feed the straps through.
I forgot to take a picture of this stage but it was the same as my last game. To hang the target you can use thick fishing line doubled over and staple it to the back of the board. You can use a piece of craft paper cut to size and staple it to the back to hide all the tatty fabric.
The velcro targets pull apart very easily, you can now feed the straps through the board and fasten them at the back.
This is what the back looks like with the straps and fishing line pulled through.
Add numbers to the target
You can now put the velcro targets back together. I used some felt numbers that I had at home. They are for the value of the score for that target. I did not notice at the time that I had messed some glue onto the fabric and once completed it looked ugly. So I had to come up with an idea on how to cover the glue stain.
I used a leftover piece of felt to cut a smiley face to hide the glue. To cut the smiley face I used a Cricut vinyl cutter you can do this by hand or just don’t mess glue as I did.
Making the target shooting balls
I bought some cheap velcro tape and ping pong balls from the budget store. To make the balls stick to the target they need to be covered on velcro. You can cut the velcro into smaller strips and glue them to the ping pong balls. Cover as much of the balls surface as you can, this will make them stick better.
I made 5 balls but it is a good idea to have some extra balls because we did spend a lot of time looking for the balls while playing the game.
Making the target shooting “Gun”
To make the “gun” to shoot the balls I used a plastic cup. You can cut off the bottom of the cup and smooth the rough edges with some sandpaper. The edges must be smooth so they do not damage the balloon.
How to play the target shooting game
The balloon is tied at the bottom and the top of the balloon is cut off and stretched over the cup. To shoot the ball, it is put into the cup and aimed at the target, the ballon with the knot is pulled back and then released. The knot in the balloon will fly forward sending the ball flying out of the cup at the target. To play the game, each resident gets 5 chances to hit the target. The ball must stay on the target to count if the ball falls off that score does not get added to the total. After all five balls have been shot the resident with the highest total score is the winner.
