If you’ve never tried Unicorn Spit Stain and Glaze, you’re seriously missing out on one of the most vibrant and fun crafting products out there. This non-toxic, gel-based stain can be used on wood, metal, glass, plastic, ceramic, and more. While it’s often used for colourful wood finishes that let the grain shine through, my favourite way to use Unicorn Spit is on glass, and now, plastic Christmas baubles!
This project shows how to use Unicorn Spit and metallic paint on baubles to create truly unique ornaments. No special skills needed—just swirl, spray, and shine. Every bauble turns out different, making it perfect for anyone wanting custom holiday décor with a touch of magic.

Whether you’re decorating a tree for a care home, your family, or gifting handmade ornaments, this is an easy and satisfying DIY that’ll wow everyone.

How to use Unicorn Spit and Metallic paint on Baubles

Materials Needed
- Clear plastic or glass baubles (found in budget or craft stores)
- Unicorn Spit stain and glaze (variety of colours)
- Unicorn Spit Sparkling range – Can be bought in single bottles
- Unicorn spit metallic range
- Small spray bottle with water (fine mist setting)
- Gold metallic spray paint
- Disposable gloves
- Paper towel
- Old towel or drop cloth (for mess)
- Optional: hairdryer or sunlight for faster drying
Step 1: Choose Your Baubles
You’ll find clear baubles in most discount shops around Christmas. They come in different shapes, round, teardrop, and solar light bulb-style. I used a few varieties for this tutorial. Both glass and plastic baubles work, but plastic is safer and lighter for hanging.
I wasn’t sure if the stain would stick to plastic, but it worked perfectly. So don’t worry—just give it a go

Step 2: Add Unicorn Spit
Take the baubles apart so each half is open. Shake your Unicorn Spit well first; it helps it flow better.

Add a few drops of different colours into each half. You can swirl the bauble gently to help the Spit coat the surface. If the Spit isn’t moving much, dilute it slightly with water.
Tip: Too much movement blends the colours into a muddy mess. One or two gentle flicks of the wrist with the ball closed is enough to move the colour around. Resist the urge to overdo it!
Step 3: Create Veins with Water
Once the inside is mostly covered, mist a fine spray of water into each bauble half. Then turn them face down onto a paper towel. The water thins the Unicorn Spit and causes it to form beautiful, veined patterns as it runs out. Avoid using black, it’s overpowering and can dominate the look.

If no veins appear after a few minutes, mist again lightly. Once most of the excess has drained, flip the baubles over to dry completely.

You’ll know they’re dry when the colour turns matte and powdery. You can speed up the process with a hairdryer, but I just popped mine in the sun and they were dry in 10 minutes.
Step 4: Add Metallic Gold Paint
When the Unicorn Spit is dry, it’s time to spray the inside with metallic gold spray paint. This step is what really brings out the vein effect.

Wear gloves, hold the bauble, and spray a light coat inside. Wipe away any overspray immediately to avoid smudging. Let the paint dry fully, mine took about an hour.

The gold fills in the colour veins and creates a glowing, radiant finish that looks expensive and professionally made.
Step 5: Assemble and Display
Once dry, pop the baubles back together. That’s it, your unique, handmade decorations are ready for the tree!

These photos still don’t do them justice. The mix of colour and gold is dazzling in real life.

Try the New Sparkling and Metallic Ranges
Since I made these baubles, Unicorn Spit has released a sparkling and metallic colour range. I haven’t tried them yet, but I imagine the results would be absolutely stunning. The sparkle would add even more dimension, and the metallics could take the shimmer effect to the next level.
If you’re planning to give this project a go, the new colours are definitely worth exploring!

Warning: It’s Addictive!
Once you try this effect, you’ll find yourself eyeing every glass item in your home, wondering, “Can I Spit on that too?”
One of my first victims was a clear glass vase, followed closely by a few wine glasses!
Unicorn Spit adds such vibrant colour and character, it’s hard to stop at just one project.

I also tested it out on my wooden trough table.
