If you’re searching for a charming handmade project for Valentine’s Day, this Vintage Valentine Wall Hanging with “Love Is” Quotes will steal your heart. Inspired by the nostalgic Love Is comic strip, this wall hanging combines burlap hearts, iron-on vinyl, and rustic embellishments into a romantic DIY project. Whether you’re new to vinyl cutting or a seasoned crafter, this adorable hanging adds a sentimental, vintage touch to your home. And best of all? It’s made using recycled and repurposed materials, making it both meaningful and eco-friendly!

Love is in the Air! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the theme for this month’s International Bloggers Club (IBC) challenge was Vintage Valentine. More about IBC at the end of this blog.
How to Make a Vintage Valentine Wall Hanging with “Love Is” Quotes

Materials Needed
- Burlap fabric
- Clear gloss spray
- Heart template
- Sewing machine
- Polyfill or pillow stuffing
- Vinyl cutter (Cricut or Silhouette)
- HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl)
- Weeding tools
- Iron or Easy Press
- Parchment paper
- Scrap fabric for quote
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Wire or metal rod
- Pliers
- Metallic wax (copper or bronze)
- Decorative beads or a broken necklace
- White fabric roses or embellishments
- Leather cord (or yarn)
- Keyring or metal hoop
Step 1: Making the Burlap Hearts
Burlap gives the project that perfect vintage look. But it frays quickly! To stop this, spray your fabric with clear gloss before cutting.

Print or trace a heart shape onto paper and pin it to the burlap.

Use a sewing machine with small stitches to sew around the heart outline. Leave a small gap for stuffing later.

Step 2: Creating the “Love Is” Design
Search online for your favourite Love Is comic illustration. I used Inkscape (free software) to convert it into an SVG file.
Upload the design into Cricut Design Space. Note: These images are copyrighted. Personal use only — no selling items with these designs.

Set the HTV shiny side down on the mat and mirror your image before cutting.

Weed away unwanted vinyl with your tools.

Step 3: Iron the Design Onto Fabric
Position your HTV design inside your sewn heart. Cover it with baking paper to protect the surface (especially if you used gloss spray).

Iron it for 15 seconds with steam turned off. Check the transfer and repeat in 5-second bursts if needed. If you are using a heat press, follow its heat settings.

You can also make a smaller fabric label for a quote using the same method. I used canvas drop sheet fabric for mine.

Step 4: Cut, Stuff, and Close
Cut around each heart with about a 1 cm border. Stuff the hearts with filling (I reused an old pillow).

Use a paintbrush handle to push the stuffing into corners.

Sew up the opening once full.

Step 5: Assemble the Hanging
Use a scrap piece of wire for the base. Bend it randomly with pliers for a rustic look. Add copper or bronze metallic wax to age it.

Glue white fabric roses and bead embellishments to your hearts. Join the hearts by gluing sections of a broken beaded necklace to the back of each one.

Step 6: Make the Tassel
Wrap leather cord around a lid to get even lengths. Push a paintbrush handle through one end and tie it off. Cut the other end to create tassels.

Attach a keyring loop and glue it to the back of the final heart.

This heart with robots was made using pallet wood and recycled scraps from my workshop.

This heart was crafted from cardboard and transformed with a mixed-media art makeover.

January 20, 2020 at 8:57 pmI really like your pretty vintage Valentine hanging, Anita! I love it even more that you used a Cricut machine. Being a newbie Cricut(er) I’m always on the hunt for fun projects and an excuse to use both my Cricut Maker and Easy Press.
