This chair makeover was a happy accident that turned into a bold and beautiful experiment. While making a wooden stump lamp, I’d just finished applying varnish when the postie arrived. He delivered a long-awaited package—my blue mica powder for an upcoming epoxy resin project. In my excitement to open it, my knife accidentally sliced a sachet of mica, sending shimmering blue powder flying all over my still-wet varnish.
What happened next was pure magic. The powder bonded to the varnish and created a luminous finish that changed in the light. From that moment, I knew I had to test this shimmer on something else—enter the chair makeover.

Materials Needed
- Old wooden chair
- Sandpaper or Orbital sander
- Chalk paint (I used Annie Sloan Napoleonic Blue)
- Chalk paint brush
- Blue mica powder
- Water-based varnish
- Mixing container
- Staple gun and staples
- Sewing machine and thread
- Rubber-backed curtain fabric or similar
- Iron or Easy Press
- Cricut Explore Air 2
- Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) design
- SVG file (I used a Marilyn Monroe graphic)
- Pillowcases for heat protection
- Saran wrap/clingfilm
- Scissors
Painting the Chair with Mica Powder
I chose a small chair to minimise waste and keep the project manageable. First, I stripped the chair and gave it a light sanding to help the chalk paint adhere.

Using a chalk paint brush, I applied two coats of Annie Sloan Napoleonic Blue and allowed it to dry fully.

Next, I mixed a small amount of blue mica powder into my water-based varnish and stirred it well. This powder is super fine and goes a long way—less is more. I applied two coats of this shimmering mixture over the chalk-painted surface.

The result was a rich, metallic-like finish that catches the light beautifully.

Reupholstering the Seat
To create the new cover, I used the original fabric as a template. The only suitable material I had on hand was white rubber-backed curtain fabric, so that’s what I went with. After tracing around the old cover, I cut the new fabric to size, sewed the edges, and left extra length at the top to ensure it would wrap over neatly.

I stapled the back flap first, followed by the front, making sure everything was taut.

The base fabric was stapled the same way—cut, fold corners neatly, and staple in place. Then I reassembled the chair. But it still felt a little too plain for my taste.

Adding the Marilyn Monroe Vinyl Graphic
Weeks passed until inspiration struck—why not add an image to the backrest? I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 and cut a Marilyn Monroe SVG file onto heat transfer vinyl. But I couldn’t iron directly onto the chair because the fabric had a rubber backing.

So I made a new fabric panel for the backrest. I placed a pillowcase inside the cover to protect the rubber and another between the vinyl and iron. You could use an Easy Press for this step, but I used a standard iron and pressed firmly until the image transferred. Do it in 30-second intervals, checking if the vinyl has transferred.

I peeled off the carrier film and was thrilled with the result.

I slid the foam into place using cling film to protect the backing, stapled the cover again, and reassembled the chair. Just like that, it was finished!

This mica powder chair makeover turned out better than I expected. The shimmer adds a unique touch, and the Marilyn Monroe graphic makes it a real statement piece. I’ll definitely be using mica powder in more furniture makeovers in the future!

Chair Makeover with DIY metallic Paint – Home and Garden
April 22, 2024 at 12:47 pm[…] I discovered this paint effect by accident. I was varnishing a project one day when I got a parcel delivered. It was some Mica Powder that I wanted to use in epoxy resin. I excitedly ripped the parcel open and the mica powder went flying all over my wet varnish. To try and save my finish I smoothed out the Mica powder with a brush and the effects were this stunning metallic paint effect. I have googled this and I can’t find where anyone else has done this. See the tutorial here. […]
