If you follow my blog, you’ll know that last year I began exploring the wonders of steampunk, and now I’m totally addicted. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, crafting a 3D Steampunk Heart: Cardboard Upcycle DIY for Valentine’s Day seemed like the perfect next project. In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through transforming ordinary corrugated cardboard into a mechanical masterpiece layered with mixed‑media embellishments, blending vintage romance with industrial flair to create a show‑stopping decoration or gift that sings steampunk style.
I’d just finished building a cardboard steampunk camera that looked so fantastic, I knew I had to tackle a heart next. In my mind, it would be a hollow cardboard heart with all the gears and cogs exposed on the inside, then brought to life with a full-on steampunk mixed‑media makeover—an obsession I’ve been completely hooked on since 2020.

This project also kicks off our very first 2021 ‘Do It Over’ Designers blog hop—a monthly gathering of creative bloggers sharing their latest recycle, upcycle and DIY delights. Don’t miss the incredible projects from the rest of the team; you’ll find links to their blogs at the end of this post!

Before we dive into this tutorial, be sure to subscribe to my bimonthly newsletter to be the first to see my latest projects. You can also follow me on Pinterest and Facebook, where I also include my unique mixed-media art projects
3D Steampunk Heart: Cardboard Upcycle DIY for Valentine’s Day

Materials Needed
To bring your 3D steampunk heart to life, gather:
- Corrugated cardboard
- Sharp craft knife & cutting mat
- Hot glue gun + glue sticks
- Ruler & pencil
- Heart template (approx. 220 mm tall)
- Cardboard strips (45 mm deep)
- Leather scraps (leftovers from other projects)
- Small plastic beads (to fill gaps), half pearls
- Black gesso or black acrylic
- Metallic green paint
- Metallic rust paint
- Makeup sponge for dabbing paint
- Mesh or netting (e.g., toy packaging)
- Steampunk silicone moulds (gears, pipes, wings)
- Broken jewellery, antique keys, filigree charms, old buttons, gears, and metal flowers. charms
Cut the Cardboard Hearts
Begin by tracing and cutting three heart shapes from corrugated cardboard, each about 220 mm tall. I printed a heart template since freehand drawing isn’t my forte. Use a sharp craft knife rather than scissors to avoid crushing the corrugations.

Glue two hearts together for a reinforced base, then reserve the third for the top of your 3D heart. Cut narrow strips (45 mm deep) to form the outer walls and inner platform, ensuring a consistent depth for the finished piece.

Split the Corrugations
To split the corrugations and reveal that lovely ridged texture, start by scoring the surface with your craft knife to lift a small corner of the top paper layer. Once you’ve got an edge, grasp both sides and gently pull—the paper usually comes away in one neat sheet, exposing those crisp, evenly spaced flutes beneath.

You can also run a pen tip along the slots to tease off the liner, but that method tends to shred the paper for a rougher, more distressed finish—perfect if you’re after extra texture.

And if your cardboard won’t budge, simply mist the surface with water, wait a couple of minutes, and the paper will peel away effortlessly.

Assemble the Heart Frame
Hot‑glue the two solid hearts together, then wrap your 45 mm strips around the edges. Overlap the ends slightly to avoid gaps.

Next, glue the smaller, hollowed‑out heart inside—this inner platform keeps the top from caving in and gives you somewhere to affix embellishments.

Wrap in Leather & Fill Gaps
I had leather scraps leftover from my Steampunk Mannequin, so I covered the heart’s front and sides with leather, glued on with quick‑dry tacky craft glue. Wherever joins left little holes, I popped in tiny plastic beads—adds support and a nifty mechanical detail.

Add Texture Base
Time for some dimension! I pressed mesh from toy packaging onto the surface and glued half‑pearls in random spots. Then I painted the whole thing black with gesso (or black acrylic paint). It’s much easier to cover every surface now than to try and paint into all those tiny gaps later.

Embellish Steampunk‑Style
For this project, I used a mix of items I bought and items I made myself. Some of the steampunk charms were created with silicone pipe moulds, along with other steampunk embellishments and wings—all of which can be filled with hot glue or set in resin.

Every mixed‑media piece needs a focal point to catch the eye. Mine was a red heart bead with wings, mounted on a broken lamp fitting so it sat taller than the other bits.

From there, I simply glued the rest of the embellishments around the inside, layering them randomly to add depth and interest.

To make the springs, I tightly wound wire around a paintbrush and then slid it off to form the coils.

Paint & Highlight
After you glue on any new pieces, give them a coat of black gesso (or black acrylic paint) so they blend in and everything has an even black finish.

I used two colours on this piece—metallic emerald green and metallic rust—and I apply them sparingly with a makeup sponge, lightly dabbing each hue into place. Try not to cover all the black beneath; letting the dark base peek through really enhances the final effect.

Final Reveal & Close‑Ups
Step back and admire your 3D steampunk heart—perfect for Valentine’s Day, a bit of home decor flair, or gifting to your favourite steampunk enthusiast.

More DIY Valentine’s Day project ideas
I crafted this wooden heart from reclaimed pallet wood and finished it with a striking Shou Sugi Ban charred effect.

I made this love‑themed heart wall hanging from burlap and added a vinyl decal cut on my Cricut.
