If you have not heard of Unicorn Spit Stain and Glaze in one you are missing out.  This product is so great, it is a non-toxic gel stain that can be used on many surfaces.  I think the main use was for blending colours on wood.  Which becomes translucent and you can see the wood grain through the colour.  But my favourite is Unicorn Spit on glass.  And the best thing about Unicorn Spit is you need no skill to use it on glass and every piece is unique. It worked so well I thought I would try Unicorn Spit on the plastic baubles for our Christmas tree.

How to use Unicorn Spit and Metallic paint on Baubles

Find clear baubles.

Come Christmas time you can always find the plastic baubles in the budget stores.  Mine were a $1 each.  There was a variety of different shapes on offer. I chose the plain ball and the solar light bulb shaped ones for this project. You can also use glass baubles.  I was not 100% sure that the unicorn spit stain and glaze would stick to the plastic, so I gave it a try. 

Add Unicorn Spit to the balls.

Start by opening up all the baubles and lay them open. You should shake the Unicorn Spit well before you start, this will help the unicorn spit flow.   I used a few drops of each colour and let it run down the ball and waited for it to cover the whole surface.  You might have to dilute the Unicorn Spit if it does not run at all.

The Unicorn Spit should flow freely around the bauble. You can keep turning the balls until all the sides are covered.  I got bored waiting for the unicorn spit to move around the surface.  So, in my wisdom, I put the ball together and gave it one or two flicks of the wrist which sent the colours flying to the sides.  If you are going to do it this way do not flick it too much or the colours will blend too much, and the final colour will look dirty.

Create the veins.

I would also not recommend using black because it will dominate all the other colours. Once the sides are covered in Unicorn spit you need spray water bottle set to a fine mist and sprayed one or 2 sprays of water into the half ball. The balls are then put face down on some paper towel to let all the excess unicorn Spit run out.  It is the spray of water I believe that makes the veins appear.  If they look nearly dry and no veins are visible add another squirt of water.

Once all the excess unicorn spit has run out you can turn the baubles to face up to dry completely.  Mine did not dry properly face down.  You can tell when they are dry because the spit turns a dull powdery colour.  You can use a hairdryer to dry them quicker but that could push the spit around. I put mine outside in the sun and they were dry in 10 minutes.

Add the gold metallic spray paint.

When the unicorn spit is all dry you can spray the inside with metallic gold paint. There is no special way to do it.  I put on disposable gloves and hold the ball and spray the inside.  Make sure you wipe off any overspray straight away.

The gold spray fills the veins in the ball gold which gives you the great effect. Even though I used quick-drying spray paint they still took about an hour to dry.

When all the spray paint was dry, I put the balls back together and that was them done ready for the Christmas tree.
