When a Christmas decoration competition popped up on one of the sites I create for, I knew I had to join in again. After doing well with my “Santa Stop Here” sign last time, I wanted to try something different—something creative yet practical. With our kids grown and out of the house, I don’t go all out with Christmas decorations anymore, but I still like to bring a bit of holiday cheer for me and my husband. Instead of setting up a big Christmas tree, I decided to craft a Christmas shelf. My initial idea was a simple triangular design with a back and a few ornaments, but once I got started, the project quickly took on a life of its own!
Every girl dreams of looking stunning on their wedding day in their beautiful wedding dress and shoes. My daughter got married recently and her reception was on a cruise showboat around Sydney harbour. She was afraid the movement of the boat could cause her to fall in high heels. Not being a girly girl, she has trouble working in high heels at the best of times, but she still wants to have sparkly shoes. We had a look on the internet, and she could not find what she had in mind. Me being the crafty one in the family I said I would have a go at making some sparkling trainers for her. You were not going to see her shoes under the dress and her feet would still be comfortable at the end of the day.
If you have not heard of Unicorn Spit Stain and Glaze in one you are missing out. This product is so great, it is a non-toxic gel stain that can be used on many surfaces. I think the main use was for blending colours on wood. Which becomes translucent and you can see the wood grain through the colour. But my favourite is Unicorn Spit on glass. And the best thing about Unicorn Spit is you need no skill to use it on glass and every piece is unique. It worked so well I thought I would try Unicorn Spit on the plastic baubles for our Christmas tree.
I recently made a target shooting game for the residents at our aged care home, and they had so much fun playing it. To add some variety to the games that they play I wanted to make another variation of the target shooting game. I know what you are thinking”why recycled a target shooting game into a target shooting game”. And the answer is with the upcycled version we are able to play the game as a group.
With the introduction of USB drives and memory cards we no longer need CDs and DVDs. We are all either live streaming our movies or downloading them. So they have become obsolete for us. So if your house is anything like mine you will have hundreds of CD’d and DVD’s lying around the house collecting dust.
I work as an aged care nurse and I am also the activities officer when she goes on holiday. I made this target shooting game for the residents in our aged care home. Last time I filled this position I took some targets and Nerf guns in and they loved the idea. The one issue I did have with the game was that the resident struggled to load the Nerf guns. For this target shooting game, I came up with an easy solution to shoot the balls.
Here in Australia Halloween has only become popular in the last few years. In our small town, you can not go trick or treating to any random house. You have to put up a display so people know you are taking part and will be handing out sweets. The idea behind this is that the old and the vulnerable do not feel intimidated by strangers knocking on their doors at night.

Every Christmas we all get together for the day and one of the games we play is darts and every year we go through the same routine. No one can find the darts. So to stop all the drama of the missing darts I decided I would make a stand that would go onto the wall next to the dartboard. That way we would always be able to find them.
I was given this wooden stand, and I’m not too sure what it is. My guess is a plant stand, but I could be wrong. It was so solid and heavy that I wanted to try and make something useful out of it. Candlesticks were the only thing I could come up with. They would not be the same size and shape, but I think that would be half the charm. And who does not love candlesticks in their home?
If you look through my website you will see that nearly all my projects have been made using recycled materials. This has enabled me to keep my hobby going with very little cost to myself for materials. 5 Years ago I decided I wanted to start woodworking as a hobby. Between my husband and son, we had a shed full of tools that just sat there. Because I had no training or skills I was always stuck doing basic boring projects for fear of messing it up and the wood being wasted. And wood is not cheap.
