If you want to add a bit of colour and fun to your dog’s collar this post is for you. Our kids are all grown up and have flown the coup so our cute little Jack Russels have become the next victims for my craft projects. This month the topic for the Int’l Bloggers Club was “Flannel”.  I made my dogs these cute Flannel dog bandannas using an old flannel shirt.

How to make a novelty dog bandanna

A little info on IBC (Int’l Bloggers Club). Every month a group of talented bloggers, from around the world, come together to create something using a common theme. How to make a Dog bandanna shape

I found a shape called a Reuleaux triangle which just looks like a triangle with curves on the sides.  This shape was perfect, I just cut one side flat. I printed the shape onto a piece of paper and spent the next 10 minutes chasing my dogs around to measure their size.  I think they knew something was coming.

Fold your fabric in half and place the template on the fold and cut out the shape.

Next, you need to fold the fabric right side in and pin it in place, so the edges don’t move while you are sewing them.

Sew a seam around the edges mine was about 1 cm from the edge. You don’t want the seam to be too wide or the seams will be too bulky.

Leave a gap big enough to turn the fabric back around the correct side, which will be sewed up later. Turn the fabric around the correct way and push out the seams using a ruler or whatever you have handy.

You can now iron the seams flat and add another row of sticking close to the edge.  This will keep the bandanna looking tidy.

Use your dog’s collar as a guide, and fold the bandanna over the collar and pin it in place.  Make sure you leave enough room for the buckle or other accessories to pass through. Then sew along the pinned line.  It is a good idea to go back and forth with the sewing machine to the beginning and the end to secure the stitching.

That was the bandanna finished.  It looked a little plain so I used a Cricut vinyl cutter to make some quotes for my Dog bandannas.

I typed up a quote in Cricut design space and cut it out onto HTV Vinyl, which is an iron-on vinyl. Iron-on vinyl is very easy to use for more info check out these custom suitcase covers.

Remove the excess vinyl and you are ready to iron on your quote.  

Place the quote in the correct position and cover with a thin cloth or parchment paper. Using a hot iron with no steam push down on the quote for about 30 seconds.  Lift up the corner of the film to see if the text is sticking to the fabric.  If the film does not peel away clear press the iron on for another 15 seconds.  Don’t rub up and down like you are ironing clothes or the text can smudge, just push down. 

I followed them outside to take some photos and the ungrateful little beggars rolled in the dirt within seconds of going outside.
