Cricut Baby Onesies: Easy DIY Personalised Designs for Gifts & Reveals is the perfect beginner project if you’re new to a vinyl cutter and want fast, adorable results.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to design, cut, and press HTV (iron-on vinyl) onto cotton baby onesies. You’ll get clear tips on size and placement. I’ll cover press settings and care advice. I’ll also share a few selling ideas if you want to turn your Cricut into a side hustle.

Onesies press quickly, use very little vinyl, and let you test fonts and layouts without stress. Custom messages make wonderful baby-shower gifts, gender-reveal surprises, and fun “you’re going to be a dad” moments. If you sell handmade items, personalised onesies are consistent sellers because parents love unique designs.

How to make a Novelty baby onesie

Materials you’ll need
- 100% cotton baby onesies (pre-wash and dry to remove sizing)
- Heat transfer vinyl (HTV), such as everyday iron-on
- Cricut machine (I used a Cricut Explore Air 2; Maker/Joy also work)
- StandardGrip mat, brayer or scraper
- Weeding tools and scissors
- Heat source: Cricut EasyPress, heat press, or a household iron
- Heat-safe surface or pressing mat
- Baking paper or a Teflon sheet (a thin cotton pillowcase also works)
You’ll need a Cricut, Silhouette, or a similar vinyl-cutting machine to make these onesies. I’m using a Cricut Explore Air 2 for this tutorial, but most machines work similarly. If you’re shopping for a new machine, consider the Cricut Maker—it has additional features that the Explore range doesn’t and can handle more materials.
Design your baby onesie in Design Space
Open Design Space and start a new project. Add a text box, type your phrase, and choose a font that suits your style. Adjust letter-spacing so the words read cleanly. If the spacing still looks off, ungroup the text and nudge letters into place using the grid as a guide.

When you’re happy, select all, Group, then Attach so everything cuts as one piece. Resize the design to suit the onesie size. If you don’t group and attach, your design will look like the image below.
Quick size & placement guide (measure your garment to confirm)
For newborns–3 months, a design width of around 9–11.5 cm works well. For 6–12 months, 12.5–15 cm is common. Centre the design and place it roughly 2.5–5 cm below the neckline ribbing so the graphic sits nicely when worn.

Cut the HTV the right way
Place the HTV shiny/plastic carrier side down on the mat. Select Mirror in the Make screen (text must be cut in reverse). Choose the correct iron-on material setting, load the mat, and cut. A small test cut helps confirm your blade depth if your vinyl brand feels thicker or thinner than usual.

Weed the design cleanly

Peel away the excess vinyl, leaving only your letters on the clear carrier.

Use a hook to weed the centres of letters like “a”, “o”, and “e”. Trim the carrier close to the design so placement on a tiny onesie is easier.

Press the design for a long-lasting finish
Pre-press the onesie for 5–10 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.

Position the design, cover with baking paper/Teflon/pillowcase, and press with firm, even pressure.

- EasyPress/heat press: Follow your vinyl brand’s guide. Every day, HTV often presses around 150–160 °C for 10–15 seconds.
- Household iron: Set to cotton/linen with steam off. Press in sections for 15–20 seconds each, keeping firm pressure and minimal movement.
Check a corner of the carrier. If the vinyl lifts, press again for 5–10 seconds. Some HTVs are warm-peel, others cold-peel—follow your brand’s directions. Peel the carrier smoothly, then cover and give a final 5–10 second press to lock the edges.

Tip: Seams and snaps can reduce pressure. Slide a small pressing pad or folded tea towel inside the onesie so the print area sits flat and level.

Care instructions to include with your gift or sale
Wait 24 hours before washing. Wash inside-out in cold water. Avoid fabric softener. Line dry. If ironing, turn inside-out and avoid direct heat on the vinyl. The labels can also be made using your Cricut and the pen function.

Troubleshooting
Edge lifting? Repress with more pressure and a cover sheet.
Small letters not sticking? Increase the time a little, and make sure the area is fully supported.
Silvering or shine marks? Use a pillowcase or Teflon sheet as a barrier.
Cracking after a wash? Usually under-pressed. Repress with a cover sheet to reseal.
