We are all collectors of one thing or another, for me I love perfume. But like all collections, they can eventually get out of control and you run out of space to store them. That was the story with my perfumes, So I wanted to make a perfume display stand to try and get some sort of order to them.
For this perfume display stand, I wanted it to look really girly, even though I am far from girly. While it is not very evident in this picture due to my rubbish photography the base stand is actually diamond mesh. And in reality, it has the most amazing sparkle effect. This was my old way to store my perfume but I have since outgrown the basket.
How to make a perfume display stand
Supplies Needed

To start I had to go scrounging around my scrap heap for suitable offcuts of wood. The plan from the very beginning was to cover the stand in diamond mesh so mismatched wood would not be an issue. I also wanted to have two steps so the perfume display would have more character. The wood was cut to the following sizes
- 600 mm x 40 mm x 40 mm (Front step)
- 600 mm x 40 mm x 100 mm (Middle Step)
- 600 mm x 10mm x 150 mm ( Back support)
- 600 mm x 10 mm x 350 mm (Base)
- Wood screws
- Drill
- Jigsaw
- Diamond mesh
- Spray Adhesive
- wood sander
- Black paint
Building the stand
To draw the semi-circle for the base I used a large wooden compass that I made from scrap wood, so please excuse the rustic design.
Find the middle of the piece of wood and draw the semi-circle, and cut it out using a jigsaw. And here comes my first mistake Oops. As you can notice from the semi-circle below I did not take into account the wood that would be needed to go under the stand to join the whole stand together.
To fix this, I cut another semi-circle allowing room for the stand and glued the first semi-circle on top of the new piece of wood.
Next, I used an orbital sander to clean up my wood, because it was recycled wood was all dirty. Your wood does need to be clean so that the spray adhesive will stick properly later.
Assembling the stand
To assemble the stand, drill pilot hole in the middle piece of wood and countersink the holes. This will allow the screws to sit flush with the wood so the back piece of wood will sit flush too.
Screw the middle piece of wood into the front one first, then screw the back piece into the middle piece. I also count sunk the screw holes in the back piece of wood.
Because of the earlier mistake, I had to go back and sand the 2 layers of wood so they were flush. The steps are not screwed into the base just yet because it will be easier to cover them while separated.
Decorating the perfume display stand
I wanted to paint the stand black first because I did not want the wood colour to show through the diamond mesh.
To give the stand a really pretty sparkling look I used some diamond mesh commonly used for wedding decorations. It is really cheap and cheerful but it does look good.
Adding the diamond mesh
Next, cut the diamond mesh into strips long enough to cover the stand with a small amount of overhang, this will be cut away later. I used a spray adhesive to glue the diamond mesh to the stand, so I would not have glue coming through the holes in the mesh.
Spray the stand and the back of the diamond mesh and leave it to stand until tacky. Mine took about 10 minutes.
I started with the back of the top shelve and covered the back with the excess. If you are going to be putting the stand in front of a mirror it is a good idea to cover the back of the stand too. This will make the stand more presentable in the mirror.
Once the stand was covered the excess mesh was cut away the excess diamond mesh. Because this mesh is soft plastic, I was able to use small nail scissor to cut away the excess and get close to the edge.
Assembling the perfume stand
Now you can join the two pieces together with some wood glue. To hold the stand together while the glue dries, I used some wood clamps. It is a good idea to add some paper towel under the clamp so they don’t crush the diamond mesh.
It was only the next day when I was looking at the photos, that I noticed that I did not line the mesh up straight on the front panel. So check that you do this before the glue sets. It was too late for me and there was no way I was starting again.
And this was the stand complete. It is a real shame the photos don’t to the diamond mesh justice.
I now have a pretty perfume display stand to display all my perfumes.
Truth be told I am going to need a bigger stand soon, still some perfumes not on my stand. Ha Ha You can also see from this photo why it is a good idea to cover the back of the stand.

May 25, 2020 at 9:14 pmYou couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate name for your blog Anita, everything you make is always so unique and different. I’ve seen that mesh in the China Mall here in Centurion and always want to touch it coz it’s just so pretty, but never bought any. I had no idea what I could possibly use it for, until now. What a really great idea.

May 27, 2020 at 8:03 amThank you, Michelle, I have so much of the stuff my sister never does anything in half measures lol Strangely enough my website name was not my idea, I thought it was pretentious. My friends kept saying my projects were so unique, so when I asked for name suggestions for my blog this one kept coming up. So I picked it in the end.

May 26, 2020 at 8:20 pmAnita,
I spotted your post on INSPIRE ME MONDAY. Clever job, nicely done! Years ago, DH bought me a small tabletop curio cabinet from Bombay Company for the purpose of me using as a perfume cabinet. It works beautifully for that and I love it! At the time I thought his idea was quite inventive. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this DIY project that anyone can do!
