I have had a few requests for my followers to do more projects ideas that you can make using a Cricut vinyl cutter.  One of the most popular projects is novelty baby onesies.  These onesies are a great starter project for a beginner to make using a Cricut.

The baby onesies are also a great project if you want to use your Cricut to generate some money.  There are so many moms out there that love the idea of onesies with a unique message.  They are also great for a baby reveal party or to let the man in your life know he will be a dad.

How to make a Novelty baby onesie

To make these onesies you will need a Cricut, silhouette or similar vinyl cutting machine. I am using a Cricut explore air 2 for this tutorial but most machines are similar.  I would recommend the new Cricut maker if you are in the market for a machine because it has so many new features the Cricut explore does not have.

Design your baby onesies

Start by opening up design space, this is the Cricut design software. Select to start a new project and then select the text tab down the left.  A text box will open up on your screen.  Next, type in the text you would like on the baby onesie and select the font you want to use.  You may find depending on the font the letter and word spacing does not look right.  To fix the spacing you need to use the letter-spacing button at the top. If the text still does not look right, you will have to select the text and push the ungroup button at the top right of your screen.  This will allow you to move each letter manually using the lines on the screen to keep them straight.

Once you are happy with the layout you have created, push the “select all” button at the top of the screen and group the text back together. Resize your text to the size you want using the measurements on the screen as a guide.  To make sure all the text cuts as one image, you also need to select all text group them and push the “attached” button in the bottom right corner.  If you don’t attach the text your text will cut like the image below, which is no good.

Cutting the vinyl

To make the baby onesies you need iron-on vinyl  (HTV). Unlike regular vinyl which goes face-up, you put the shiny side face down on the cutting mat. You are now ready to go, push the green “make it” button at the top right corner to proceed. On this next screen, you must select the mirror button because you are cutting text. If you don’t select mirror your text will cut in mirror image. Next, select the iron-on setting on the machine dial and load your project using the double arrow button on the machine. Finally, push the “C” button and the machine will start cutting.

Weeding the design

The next step is to remove all the excess vinyl from the design using your weeding tools.

Once you have removed the bulk of the vinyl, you will need to remove the vinyl from between the letter like the “o” and the “g” for example.

Once you have just the text, you can cut around the film to separate all the words.

Transferring the vinyl

If you don’t have the Cricut easy press you can use a regular iron or an old Elna press like I have. I like to press the onesie before I add the text, the text seems to stick better.

Next, place the text where you want it to be. My Elna press is very old, so I use an old pillowcase between my onesie and the metal. The guide said to use Teflon sheets or baking paper, I found a pillowcase over the text works perfectly. I hold the press down for 15 seconds at a time, checking in between if the vinyl has transferred. If you lift the plastic and the text is still attached, press for another 10 seconds. You can keep doing this until the vinyl sticks to the onesie.

The Elna press worked great, but I did have some areas around the seems that were harder to transfer. So, for the projects I have done since this one, I used my regular house iron. 

Finally, you pull off the plastic backing and your novelty baby onesies are complete.
