If you’re a fan of science fiction, industrial technology, or vintage aesthetics, you’ll love these 20 steampunk-inspired DIY projects! As a passionate steampunk enthusiast, I’ve found that this creative genre often sneaks its way into many of my designs, whether I’m working on a furniture makeover or a quirky decor piece.
My goal is always to create something unique, blending the old with the new in imaginative ways. In this post, I’m sharing a roundup of my top steampunk projects – each made with recycled materials and designed to add an industrial touch to any space.

In late 2019, I stumbled upon a steampunk mixed media project on Pinterest, and it was love at first sight. Intrigued, I watched a few step-by-step YouTube tutorials and quickly realised it was easier than I first thought. I had assumed that mixed media art would require advanced artistic skills, but I was proven wrong. Once you embrace the messy, creative process, you’ll find that anyone can dive into mixed media art. A key part of my approach is using recycled materials in most of my projects, which helps to keep costs low. You’ll also notice that many of my creations feature similar embellishments. Once you’ve invested in the moulds, it becomes an affordable process, as you can reuse them in multiple projects.

25 Steampunk Project Ideas
1. Steampunk Mannequin
This steampunk mannequin began life as a simple, old shop mannequin I discovered at a local thrift store. To create a steampunk masterpiece, I covered the figure in faux leather scraps, arranging them into a textured, patchwork surface.

2. Steampunk sock gnomes
Sock gnomes have taken over Pinterest as a popular DIY trend for every occasion, and it’s no surprise—they’re adorable and fun to make! To give my sock gnomes a unique twist, I decided to give them a steampunk makeover. I followed the basic steps for traditional sock gnomes but added industrial flair with fancy steampunk hats and beards.

3. Steampunk prop camera
The inspiration behind this project stemmed from my need for unique photography props to stage my DIY creations for Pinterest. I searched for a vintage camera to add authentic charm to my photos but couldn’t find one. So, I got creative and made my own using cardboard and a soda can, crafting a unique prop with the vintage, industrial feel I wanted.

4. Steampunk Hat made from recycled materials
When most people think of steampunk, the first things that come to mind are often the iconic hat and goggles. I decided to create my own unique version of this classic steampunk look, using a plastic bucket and cardboard as the base for the hat. This unconventional approach not only kept costs low but also allowed me to get creative with the design.

5. Steampunk Lamp
Another popular DIY project in the steampunk world is the creation of lamps made from galvanised pipes. While these industrial-style lamps are a common sight, I wanted to add my own unique twist to the concept. Instead of just sticking with the traditional look, I decided to give it a mixed-media makeover, incorporating mainly recycled materials.

6. Steampunk resin doorknobs
Love furniture makeovers but struggle to find the perfect doorknobs? This post will help you solve that problem! Instead of settling for standard options, why not create your custom doorknobs? Using resin, you can craft doorknobs tailored to match any theme or aesthetic. The beauty of this DIY project is the endless possibilities for personalisation.

10. Steampunk mirror
You can also transform everyday furniture with a steampunk makeover, infusing industrial charm and vintage appeal into ordinary pieces. With creativity and recycled materials, you can transform everyday furniture into unique pieces full of character and style.

11. Steampunk altered bottle
I’m sure we all have a collection of empty wine bottles or unique glass bottles tucked away at home. Instead of letting them gather dust or end up in landfill, repurpose bottles into functional, stylish lamps or décor that add a personalised touch to your home.

12. Steampunk Doorstop
I needed a doorstop for my front door during the summer months. Instead of buying a plain one, I decided to make my own. This DIY project turned into a charming steampunk gnome, made from cement and an old plastic bottle. The plastic bottle formed the base, giving the gnome structure and stability. Cement shaped the body and added weight. I then added steampunk elements like gears, faux leather, and metal embellishments to give the gnome that signature industrial flair.

13. Steampunk ring holders/shoes
With this technique, you can elevate your shoes for a special occasion by adding a unique, steampunk-inspired design. Whether for a wedding, themed event, or to make a statement, this DIY project lets you personalise shoes that truly stand out. For a functional twist, you can also turn these embellished shoes into ring holders or decorative displays.

14. Mixed media steampunk heart
This cardboard steampunk-themed heart makes for a unique and creative gift, especially for Valentine’s Day. With its industrial charm and vintage-inspired design, it’s the perfect way to show someone you care with a personalised touch.

15. Book repurposed into a jewellery box with a steampunk theme
As books become less popular in the digital age, many are sadly ending up in the landfill. But instead of letting them go to waste, why not repurpose them into a unique and functional jewellery box?

16. Steampunk-themed wedding canvas
Are you looking for a unique keepsake gift for a special occasion? Why not create a personalised canvas that captures the essence of their day? This DIY project allows you to incorporate meaningful elements from the occasion—whether it’s a wedding, anniversary, or birthday—into a beautifully crafted canvas.

17. Man cave sign with a steampunk theme
If you have a hard-to-buy-for man in your life, this “Man Cave Sign with Bar Rules” idea is sure to be a hit. Whether for a birthday, Father’s Day, or just because, this personalised sign adds a touch of humour and personality to any man cave or home bar. You can customise it with fun, quirky rules that match his style, making it a unique gift he’ll love to display. For a steampunk twist, incorporate vintage elements like gears, cogs, and distressed wood to create a rugged, industrial vibe.

18. Steampunk suitcase protectors
Do you often find yourself standing at the airport carousel, scanning through a sea of identical suitcases? With a personalised suitcase cover, you can easily protect your luggage and spot it from a distance. This custom cover not only adds a unique touch to your suitcase but also ensures it stands out from the crowd, making it easy to identify. You can personalise it with a name, favourite colours, or even a fun design that reflects your style.

19. Steampunk-themed home decor books
Painted books are all the rage in home decor right now, and they offer a creative and stylish way to transform ordinary books into unique decorative pieces. With this technique, you can turn any image, photograph, or artwork into a book cover, giving your books a personalised and artistic touch that perfectly matches your decor style. Whether it’s a vintage design, a steampunk theme, or even a modern graphic, the possibilities are endless.

22. Steampunk dinner tray
This wooden dinner tray was transformed with a steampunk-inspired design, laser-engraved with an intricate image of a steampunk lady, complete with vintage details like gears and cogs. To add a touch of fun and personality, quirky words were also engraved, bringing a playful yet industrial flair to the piece

23. Wooden Steampunk Christmas tree
Another version of a steampunk Christmas tree can be created using recycled wood, broken jewellery, and resin embellishments for a truly unique and eco-friendly holiday decor piece.

24. Steampunk Bottle art
This method will teach you how to decorate any bottle using a steampunk theme, turning it into a stunning piece of home decor or a unique gift. Whether it’s an old wine bottle, a glass jar, or a vintage-looking bottle, you can easily transform it.
